Compare disposable change mats and reusable covers for home, travel, and everyday use. Learn the trade-offs and choose the right option for your baby.
Quick Answer
Choose reusable covers for everyday home use to save money and reduce waste, but keep disposable change mats for travel and on-the-go changes.
Convenience vs. Cost
Disposable change mats win on convenience: you use them once and toss them, which is perfect for outings, nappy changes in public restrooms, or when you don't have easy access to laundry. Reusable covers, on the other hand, cost less over time because you wash and reuse them, making them the budget-friendly choice for daily changes at home.
Travel Considerations
When you're travelling, disposable mats are lightweight and take up minimal space. They also eliminate the worry of carrying a soiled cover back home. However, if you're staying in one place for a while, a reusable cover can be just as practical—just pack a spare or two for quick changes.
Environmental Impact
Reusable covers are the greener option since they generate less waste. Disposable mats, while convenient, add to landfill. If sustainability is a priority, reserve disposables for situations where washing isn't possible and rely on reusable covers for most changes.
How to Decide: Trade-offs
- For home use: Choose reusable covers like the Bubba Blue 2PK. They save money over time and are easy to wash. Stock at least two covers so you always have a clean one.
- For travel: Opt for disposable mats like the babyU 10 Pack. They're lightweight, hygienic, and you can discard them after use. Keep a pack in your nappy bag for emergencies.
- If you want to reduce waste: Prioritize reusable covers and limit disposables to situations where washing isn't practical.
