Compare the LEGO DUPLO Number Train and Family House to decide which set to buy first for your toddler, based on age, play value, and budget.
Quick answer
For most toddlers, start with the LEGO DUPLO Number Train (10954) because it's more affordable and introduces early counting through hands-on play. Choose the Family House if your child is already engaged with DUPLO and ready for open-ended role play.
Age and developmental fit
The Number Train is part of the DUPLO range for ages 0 to 3, making it a safe and simple introduction to building. The Family House is aimed at toddlers aged 2 and up, so it suits slightly older children who are ready for more complex play.
If your child is under 2, the Number Train's larger, simpler pieces are easier for small hands. The Family House includes more detailed elements and a wider variety of bricks, which may be overwhelming for younger toddlers.
Play value and learning focus
The Number Train focuses on numbers and counting, helping your child recognize digits and sequence them as they build the train. It's a structured activity that also encourages fine motor skills.
The Family House, on the other hand, supports imaginative role play. Toddlers can explore family scenarios, arrange rooms, and create their own stories. This open-ended play grows with the child and can be combined with other DUPLO sets.
Consider what your child needs most right now: early numeracy or creative play. Many families eventually own both, but the first set should match your child's current interests and developmental stage.
Budget and value
Price is a key factor. The Number Train is significantly more affordable, making it a low-risk first purchase. The Family House is a bigger investment, but it offers more pieces and a more versatile playset.
If you're unsure whether your child will engage with DUPLO, starting with the Number Train lets you test the waters without a large outlay. If your child already loves DUPLO, the Family House provides better long-term value due to its open-ended nature.
